In 1957 Walter and Pearl Bloom founded Camp Playland in New Canaan. Sixty-eight campers were enrolled that first summer, and their facilities consisted of a pool and ball field. Over 50 years later, the New Canaan campus of Camp Playland continues to thrive.
In the 1990s, Walter saw the need to bring his style of camping to northern Fairfield County. Together, Walter and his son, Richard, worked to purchase and zone their Redding campus. In 1996, Richard and his wife, Barbara, opened Camp Playland of Redding, bringing summer fun to children in Redding and the surrounding communities.
Today, Camp Playland of Redding enrolls 270 campers and has a staff of over 70 dedicated teachers, college and high school students. The Bloom family tradition continues.
