Richard and Barbara Bloom
I grew up in a summer camp family. My parents, Walter & Pearl Bloom, founded Camp Playland in 1957 when I was 2 years old. I was a camper through ninth grade and then began working as a camp counselor. In 1977, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and delayed the start of my first job so I could spend a last summer working at Camp as director of the Playland swim program. When the summer ended I began my career as a Certified Public Accountant.
In 1982 I married Barbara, a school teacher by background. While raising our children, Adam and Amanda, Barbara worked summers at Camp Playland New Canaan to learn the family business. When Amanda started kindergarten, Barbara returned to the classroom as a paraprofessional in the Redding schools.
In 1988 my father began searching for property to hold a second camp. Eight years later, in 1996, we opened Camp Playland of Redding. Playland is truly a family business. Prior to starting their own careers, Adam and Amanda worked at our Redding camp; Adam as a Swim Instructor and Amanda as our Music & Drama Specialist.
Today, Barbara and I continue the Bloom family tradition, working together to bring summer fun to children in Redding and the surrounding communities.
Camp Playland counselors are chosen for their maturity, ability, experience, and sincere love of children.
Hiring, training, and retaining quality staff members is our highest goal. Our staff includes teachers, parents, coaches, college and high school students, working together as a team to make each summer special.
Counselors return year after year, enhancing the feeling of Camp Playland as your child’s summer family.
